Why the flash betrays it
A living petal is translucent and scatters light within itself. Silk reflects at the surface. Hit it straight on and it returns a specular highlight that no fresh flower ever produces.
What to do instead
- Bounce the flash, or move it off the axis of the lens
- Favour side light, which reveals the shaping of each petal
- Meter for the ivory, not the foliage — silk whites clip early
