Fire Safety and Event Florals: What the Certificate Means

Every venue manager asks for the certificate. Very few ask what it actually certifies, and the distinction matters more than the paperwork.

Retardant, not proof

A fire-retardant silk resists ignition and self-extinguishes when the flame is removed. Held long enough against a naked flame, it will still burn. No fabric certificate says otherwise.

What the venue actually needs

  • A current BIS test certificate for the material batch
  • Clearance between florals and any open flame
  • Structures that do not obstruct a fire exit
  • Nothing suspended below the sprinkler deflector plane

The clause everyone forgets

Sprinklers. A dense suspended ceiling within half a metre of a sprinkler head will delay activation. We rig below the plane or not at all, and it is the first thing we check on a site visit.
